Halloween is the modern name for Samhain, an ancient Celtic holy day which many Neopagans — especially Wiccans, Druids and Celtic Reconstructionists — celebrate as a spiritual beginning of a new year.
What do American Neopagans do on Samhain? No blood drinking, no baby sacrifices, no crimes — just good, clean, all-American festivity with some ceremonial additions appropriate to the season and current events.

The name Halloween comes from hallow and eve since it is the evening before "All Hallows Day". In Ireland, the name was called Hallow Ever and this is still used by come of the older people. Halloween has also been called All Saints' Eve. Halloween was brought to North America in the 19th century by immigrants. The holiday was a day of religious festivities but was changed by Christian missionaries who gave it their own interpretation. It has also been called Pooky Night (named after the puca, a mischievous spirit) in some parts of Ireland. Pagan Celts in Great Britain and Ireland celebrated the Day of the Dead on All Hallows Day (1st of November). They believed the spirits rose from the dead and to attract them people left food on the doors. Celts wore masks to scare off evil spirits. Then when the Romans invaded Britain, the brought their own traditions which included a celebration of the harvest and also to honor the dead. All of these were brought to the United States and Canada as we said by immigrants to the new world.

Two cities in the USA claim the title of "Halloween Capital of the World." and they are Anoka, Minnesota and Salem, Massachusetts. Spooky and scary things, especially magic and mythical monsters, symbolize Halloween. Decorations and costumes include ghosts, ghouls, demons, skeletons, zombies, goblins, spiders witches, bats, black cats and owls. Another symbol of Halloween are fictional characters Dracula and Frankenstein's Monster. Black and orange have become the traditional colors of Halloween.
